It had to be midday, the time where the shadows were small and the air was hot. A small tree shook as it was victimized by a vegetarian. Any bird dumb enough to land on it was quickly startled away as the giant plant-eater took another bite. His mouth scraped over the woody branches, grabbing leaves with each stroke.
It was a boring, lonely day. The rest of the herd was a couple hundred yards away, grouped together in protection. The young ones were hidden behind the larger adults. A loud sigh escaped ol' Crossheart as he chewed his food, eyes scanning unenthusiastically. A very distant roar of a carnivore caused a moment of silence between all of the herd. Cross volunteered himself to lift to his hind feet. A couple of seconds to make sure it didn't happen again, and everyone went back to their original business.
Bugs buzzed around, pestering eyes and any open wounds an animal had. Cross shook his large head and snorted - fucking mosquitoes were a pain. Luckily small dinosaurs were chasing them, snapping their jaws over the pestilence.

In the shade of some nearby bushes, a sleepy raptor was waking up from a much needed nap. He yawned widely, and reflexively snapped at a passing dragonfly. He missed, unfortunately. Dragonflies were one of his favorite snacks. He sighed heavily, contented despite having missed out on a snack. It was simply a gorgeous day, and there was no need to be aggravated. Besides, he'd eaten earlier in the day and wouldn't need to eat until much later.
Just as he was standing up to stretch, a bone-chilling roar echoed through the trees. Everything grew silent. It was only then that the Troodon realized he was no longer alone in this clearing as he had been when he fell asleep. A very short distance away was a gargantuan Edmontosaurus. His eyes widened a bit, and he got up slightly quicker. A few more steps and he'd have been squashed like a bug. He trotted a short distance away before doing his stretching, then called up to the beast towering above him: "You there! Kind Edmontosaurus! Who is it that created that terrible noise? Could you tell from where you are?" The Troodon did not worry that he would cause a panic to the Edmontosaurus. He was, after all, almost seven times smaller than the herbivore.

Eyes stared the other way, observing the herd he was barely apart of anymore. Cross snorted, then grazed a little more on a honeysuckle that was hardly within reach. His body was turned and stretched into an odd angle, but he was comfortable regardless. And then, a small voice attracted his attention. At first, he searched eye-level, then peered down to a small raptor-type known as a Troodon.
"It sounded like a Mapusaurus to me," he grumbled, examining the smaller dinosaur with little care. As he took in a breath, his sides inflated - and just as he was about to let go, a loud roar that sounded as if was in his ear rang out, and a crash through trees caused his herd to freak. Crossheart looked over to see the very dinosaur he'd guess trying to pick out a meal between the large herbivores. The lead male stomped his feet and bellowed out, all the while the group backed away as best as they could in some attempt to keep the babies safe.
Cross glanced back at the Troodon, expecting him to flee. He then turned his body to face the Mapusaurus and screamed at him, grabbing the attention of the meat-eater. His tail swung side to side as he paced the ground, ready for his own fight or flight reaction.

Tazo, for that was the little raptor's name, examined the large herbivore while he waited to be acknowledged. When he got his answer he nodded, looking around and wondering how close the creature was. They were very large carnivores, and though they were no threat to Tazo for his size and speed, he still didn't particularly want to run into one face to face. Unfortunately for him, moments later the creature in question belted out his battle cry. This caused Tazo to jump a bit and gave him quite a fright. He dashed into the bushes he'd been sleeping in, but didn't go any further. He wanted to stick around to see what was going to happen, and maybe even put his clever mind to work to help out the herd of edmontosaurs.
He glanced up at the edmontosaurus that he'd spoken to, making eye contact for a quick moment before looking back at the mapusaurus. He had an idea to distract the beast that might have a chance of working, but it was very risky. The giant brute kept bellowing his challenges, and Tazo knew that he had to act within moments if he wanted to help keep the edmontosaurs, especially the babies, safe. He darted out from his cover and, being relatively unseen due to his coloring, raced over to the mapusaurus, getting within inches of him. Once he was close enough, he snapped sharply with his specialized serrated teeth at the beast's ankles, drawing little droplets of blood. Surely this would be enough to take his attention away from the herbivores.

Bellows of defense and rage flew back and forth between plant munchers and the blood-lust beast. It was like a battle of roaring, words seeming to float around in terms of dinosaur lingo. Finally, when the little raptor - Tazo - took initiative, the Mapusaurus became distracted long enough for the herd to turn and head the other way. Adult pushed the youth forward, while the leader pushed the herd. A stampede was the result.
The crackle of crashing trees and upturned shrub was Crossheart's signal to charge and slam his body into the gut of the carnivore. With that, he smirked and took off along the trail his herd had made. Cross threw his head high and released a victorious bellow, quite pleased with what he accomplished. The Mapusaurus wasn't quite as happy, and he let Cross know this by angrily roaring after him. Cross was no phased. Usually when your prey was able to shove your ass over, you didn't go after them. It was like a hint that maybe you were too small for that meal.

When Tazo finally got the large carnivore's attention, he looked up and grinned wide, showing all his teeth and then dodging out of the way of the beast's low-sweeping tail. He barely avoided being knocked out, but his plan worked and it was enough of a distraction to help the edmontosaurs. He watched Cross's actions from a short distance away. He was distracted for a moment by the sounds of the stampeding herd, and when he looked back he panicked and fled from the cover of the trees. He'd narrowly avoided being squashed by the falling mapusaurus.
He skirted around the fallen creature and ran after the retreating Edmontosaurus. It took a moment but he finally caught up and glanced at the large male. "Well that was a close one. Say, what's your name?"

The beast galloped as quickly as his oddly shaped body would allow, his large hind legs thrusting him forward powerfully. He honestly had not expected the little Troodon to follow after him. After all, he was a large, grumpy plant muncher and he was... tiny? The large male ignored Tazo's question until they were back with the herd that had settled in an area without so many trees. He snorted, then looked down at then smallish thing.
"Why is my name of importance to you?" he asked stubbornly. A moment passed before he shook his body, dust clouding the air.
"My name is Crossheart," he murmured.
The Edmontosaurus slowly made his way to a large tree. Upon arriving to it, he pressed his side against it and dragged his body along the bark. The itch he had was quickly relieved by this motion, so he was able to go about his original activity that was known widely as "grazing."

Tazo kept up with and followed the larger beast easily once he got into the swing of running. Though he was admittedly relieved when he and the herd stopped running. He was tired now. He was panting a bit but grinning nevertheless. The Edmontosaurus' first comment didn't bug Tazo in the slightest. He could already tell that the herbivore was quite the grumpy type. Being bothered by his snide comments wasn't going to get anybody anywhere.
He was a bit surprised that he actually got the creature's name and committed it to memory. "Crossheart." He repeated. "A pleasure to work help you out Crossheart. My name is Tazo." Tazo imagined that Crossheart could probably give two shits less about his name, but he offered it nevertheless. No reason not to. He looked around at the large herbivores grazing around him. Some of the little ones were playing and had seemingly forgotten all about the Mapusaurus who had threatened them mere minutes before. Tazo turned back toward the forest - the trees were swaying a bit. It seemed the Mapusaurus was limping away defeated.

Bothered once again by the undersized carnivore. Slowly, he turned his eyes back Tazo. A grunt was all the little beast received from him. Shortly after, he began walking toward the river that ran through the forest for a nice drink. A small limp could be noticed if one ever took the time. Ol' Cross didn't seem to care. Old injury was all it was.
Knowing the curious thing that had been following him this whole time so far would still be there, he spoke without looking. "Why do you follow me, Troodon? Are you hoping I might be a snack for you soon since I am always at the back of the herd?"
A snort followed. Water began licking at his legs as he waded in to about chest height. His odd-shaped nose dipped into the water and he sifted it into his mouth. It was cool sliding down his throat. Refreshing, indeed. And the lapping of waves calmed him, but barely.

Predictably, the small raptor Tazo followed quickly behind Cross. He noticed the limp, but didn't even consider mentioning it. He knew from experience that if another dino wanted to tell you about something that was bothering them, they would. It wasn't very polite to ask. So he wouldn't. He laid down on the bank of the river and watched the large herbivore.
A loud bursting laugh escaped his maw when he heard Crossheart's question. The idea was thoroughly ridiculous. Him? The tiny Troodon waiting to eat the gigantic Crossheart? He laughed again. "No! You're kind of a silly old brute for thinking that. Me snack on you? That's ridiculous." Once Tazo got his laughing out of the way, he composed himself and sighed before explaining. "I am merely hanging about for the company. I have no one here, you see. No family. It gets lonely. The company is nice every now and again. Please, if my presence is bothering you tell me. I will leave immediately."
